A fire that was caused by an electric scooter on charge in a garage attached to a property in Peacehaven caused extensive damage. The fire service attended to extinguish the blaze that started extremely quickly. Once the fire was out and safe to enter, we were instructed to attend the property to inspect the fire and smoke damage.
The property was a 2 bedroom rental house, but as there was no power, water and gas were turned off, the tenant had moved out into a relative's home until the property was habitable again.
As well as the garage door itself, the contents of the garage were completely destroyed including a motorbike, ride-on mower, various tools, a mobility scooter, a couple of dirt bikes and various children's toys. A hot tub just outside the garage was melted following the blaze. Smoke had also entered the property through an open window causing the entire house to smell of smoke. In addition, there was soot damage to one side of the house, next to where the garage is located.
Firstly, we needed to ascertain which content was unrestorable therefore requiring disposal. We then needed to identify any content that could be restored and be removed to our warehouse for processing. We then installed an Air Manager whilst work was being carried out inside the property to deal with the smoke smell. Rather than just masking the smoke odours, an Air Manager eradicates odours, removes smoke and soot particles. The smoke smell can linger for weeks or even months, if left untreated.
We cleaned and deodorised all content belonging to the tenant, professionally cleaned their rug, leather sofas and armchairs. To ensure all electrical equipment was safe, we PAT tested all electrics. Another visit was organised to remove the soot from the wall of the house closest to the garage, we used media blasting & DOFF to remove the soot, restoring the brick to pre-incident condition.
Air Manager
This works to remove smoke and soot residue and it is completely safe to use in an occupied premises. The odour and smoke are driven through filters by high efficiency fans into a forced ozone chamber. This operates on low running costs and is environmentally friendly.
DOFF
To effectively remove the soot damage from the brick at the side of the house, we used the DOFF system. This innovative method is the latest technology in soot removal and uses high temperature steam to gently remove soot, grime or algae, so it does not damage the surface.
