Fire gutted the BMW showroom and workshops in Portsmouth, with extensive fire damage to an isolated area but extensive smoke damage to the rest of the building. Fire crews were called to the BMW Snow’s premises in the evening and fire tenders were still making safe until 3 am the next morning. It took over two fire crews from the surrounding area of Cosham and Southsea to put the fire out.
The initial fire had been caused by a single vehicle on fire in the workshop and smoke damage had spread throughout the huge building. It took three hours to get under control but the firefighters managed to stop it from spreading to the nearby Snow’s BMW main showroom where top-of-the-range cars with values totalling thousands of pounds are on display.
CPL t/a Rainbow Restoration are commercial fire damage restoration specialists dealing with thousands of fires and floods throughout the UK. We were instructed to clean up and restore the premises in Portsmouth to its former look.
On approaching these fire damage projects, we are usually the second responders on the scene working with the insurance companies and the affected businesses to start the fire damage restoration work. The fire brigade have left the building and have given us the all-clear to proceed with the clean-up operation.
We will have agreed terms and have liaised with the insurance companies by then. On entering the building, we, first of all, carry out a feasibility study and create a plan of action. We communicate with all parties determining the estimated length of time to achieve the project goals.
Work to restore the fire damaged building then starts soon afterwards, starting at the top and working down, removing and rebuilding and doing everything necessary to get the building in a state where it can be decorated again.
We used the very latest technology to assess the BMW showroom in Portsmouth and throughout the clean-up process. Through thousands of other fire damage restoration jobs over our time our team have this down to a fine art. The particular job that affected the BMW showroom was the tiles that were either melted from the heat source or the smoke that can cause as much damage over a wider area.
The ceiling tiles had melted and the ceiling had been discoloured from the thick black smoke resulting from the burning car. Ceiling tiles, ceiling struts, floors, and walls all had to be cleaned using our environmentally friendly processes that were used to produce super clean surfaces. We used different types of machinery according to the extent of the fire and smoke damage and the surface.
So, for example, we used a gentle eco-friendly detergent combined with a piece of equipment that produces super high temperatures of 200 degrees Celsius. The combination of the oscillating head, the detergent and the temperature was used to remove oil, soot, and carbon deposits from the floors of the garage area following the fire. Another process used a vacuum process to inject water at pressure and remove it at the same time. So very quickly you can see the area being renovated before your very eyes.
But this is not a job for the faint-hearted, the mess that comes from the aftermath of a fire is extreme. You not only have all the water that the firefighters used to put out the fire but also the debris, smoke and carbon deposits to deal with.
Health and safety is our number one priority and we make sure that we live up to our certification as a Safe Contractor. Breathing apparatus can vary, but initially, this is quite substantial to start with then moving to smaller less invasive masks after the risks have been dealt with.
The most important part of the fire restoration process is making sure the clean-up begins as soon as possible, to minimise any lasting damage to the building.
