One of the many fire and smoke clean-up projects that CPL t/a Rainbow Restoration dealt with, is one that also made the national headlines due to the size and close proximity to the BBC in London, where thick black smoke could be seen from miles around. As soon as the property was deemed safe, we attended the damaged commercial building which, at the time of the fire, was still under construction. The fire was caused by sparks from cutting the steels within the building structure, which then ignited the insulation. Unfortunately, the fire also contained plastics which resulted in the soot being particularly sticky, which could not have been removed completely from a textured surface, without media blasting.
Smoke damage can be more extensive than most people realise and sooty residues will start to permanently affect surfaces within minutes. Plastics and paint become discoloured, metals begin to tarnish and smoke particles can settle into fabrics and upholstery, which can be difficult to thoroughly decontaminate. If the wrong cleaning methods are used, soot and smoke particles can cause more damage and be harder to repair in the long run. Essentially, the longer the damage is left, the bigger the problem you may be faced with, so it is important to call in the experts in such a situation, to deal with the problem.
CPL t/a Rainbow Restoration were instructed by our client to remove excess soot and seal the structure with specialist soot sealant, as the customer was going to cover the affected structure. On this occasion, media blasting was not required to bring the surface back to pre-damage condition. The area was dry vacuumed, to remove excess soot and the worst affected areas were wiped down with a high alkaline soot specialist product. Once excess soot was removed, all affected areas were sealed with a specialist soot-locking product to prevent any odours. Our client could then continue with completing the construction of the building. A total strip-out and reinstatement service is also offered, in circumstances where it is not possible to clean-up the damage, to get your building back to pre-incident condition. However, we always aim to restore wherever possible, to minimise costs and disruption.
